A special mention must be made of the wonderful musicians who have commited themselves to this Labour of Love. First of all, Sicroff himself and then the two sopranos Claron McFadden and Nina Lejderman.

Lejderman sings fluidly, particularly delightful when drunk at the final party, swigging from a hip flask for her famous aria.

The musical icing on the cake was Swedish soprano Nina Lejderman. Her rich voice brought Purcell’s bittersweet notes perfectly to life. And her graceful appearance was apparent throughout, even in a bear costume …

De muzikale krenten in de pap waren voor de Zweedse sopraan Nina Lejderman. Haar weelderige stem bracht Purcells bitterzoete noten perfect tot leven. En haar gracieuze verschijning bleef zelfs in een berenpak overeind…

Nina Lejderman sang with pure, straight sound combining a lovely expressive recitative with nicely flexible and flowing technique in the arias.

Nina Lejderman’s See the Night, a lullaby in a brief moment of calm in the ward, was beautiful, her voice dark and tender.

The gorgeous, heart-breaking soprano aria O Let me ever, ever weep was transplanted to the beginning of the second act and sung beautifully, again by Nina Lejderman.

Vocally, top marks go to the two Nurses, Lejderman and Alder. Both these singers produced lovely, bright, crystal-clear soprano singing throughout, and neither seemed the slightest bit phased by any of the coloratura passages Purcell threw at them. Perhaps most importantly of all, while each offered a distinctive range of vocal colours, the voices blended beautifully together – some of the best-matched female duet singing I’ve heard for a while in fact – aided by excellent intonation from each singer.

Two performances were exceptional. Nina Lejderman’s soprano might be small, but she manipulated it with penetrating force, and made Hypsipyle’s final aria of tragic lament the high point that it was meant to be.

Soprano Nina Lejderman (Isifile) made the transition from the somewhat dull and abandoned wife to the true heroine of the plot convincingly. Her lament in Act Three seemed to have the audience spell-bound: one could have heard a pin drop in the auditorium.

The vocal works were Handel’s Parti l’idolo mio and Meine Seele hört im Sehen (HWV 147/207), sung beautifully by Nina Lejderman, a talented Swedish soprano who has recently completed a postgraduate course at the Royal Academy of Music.
